Fort Lewis was created in 1916 when local businessmen decided to create a military base near American Lake. The military base became known as camp Lewis and would be critical in training soldiers for world war 1. More construction of the camp would officially/ turn it into Fort Lewis in 1927.

McChord Air Force Base was initially named Tacoma Field in the year 1927 when locals voted to create a municipal airport. The small airport was then purchased by the US Government in 1938 and then the name was changed to McChord Field in May in respect of Colonel Bill McChord who died in Virginia during aircraft training. The base served as a critical training center for World War II bomber pilots who participated in the allied invasion of Italy, the Doolittle Raid, and southern France.

McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis were officially joined to form Joint Base Lewis McChord in 2010 and the name remains the same till this day.
